Check which of the following are solutions of the equation x - 2y = 4 and which are not:
    (i) (0, 2)              (ii) (2, 0)             (iii) (4, 0)            (iv) (√2, 4√2)              (v) (1, 1)

Answer

(i) Put x = 0 and y = 2 in the equation x - 2y = 4.
0 - 2×2 = 4
⇒ -4 ≠ 4
∴ (0, 2) is not a solution of the given equation.

(ii) Put x = 2 and y = 0 in the equation x - 2y = 4.
2 - 2×0 = 4
⇒ 2 ≠ 4
∴ (2, 0) is not a solution of the given equation.

(iii) Put x = 4 and y = 0 in the equation x - 2y = 4.
4 - 2×0 = 4
⇒ 4 = 4
∴ (4, 0) is a solution of the given equation.

(iv) Put x = √2 and y = 4√2 in the equation x - 2y = 4.
√2 - 2×4√2 = 4 ⇒ √2 - 8√2 = 4 ⇒ √2(1 - 8) = 4
⇒ -7√2  ≠ 4
∴ (√2, 4√2) is not a solution of the given equation.

(v) Put x = 1 and y = 1 in the equation x - 2y = 4.
1 - 2×1 = 4
⇒ -1 ≠ 4
∴ (1, 1) is not a solution of the given equation.
