Surface Areas and Volumes

NCERT Exercise Exercise 13.4

The radius of a spherical balloon increases from 7cm to 14cm as air is being pumped into it. Find the ratio of surface areas of the balloon in the two cases.

Let r be the initial radius and R be the increased radius of balloons.
r = 7cm and R = 14cm
Ratio of the surface area =4πr2/4πR2
                                        = r2/R2
                                        = (7×7)/(14×14) = 1/4
Thus, the ratio of surface areas = 1 : 4
